What is APO-HYDROXYQUINE used for?
APO-HYDROXYQUINE (hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets) is indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus, in adult patients who have not responded satisfactorily to drugs with less potential for serious side effects. It is also indicated for the suppressive treatment and treatment of acute attacks of malaria due to P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and susceptible strains of P. falciparum.

How is it administered?
Adults: 400-600mg/day initially, then 200-400mg maintenance. Malaria: 400mg weekly (suppression) or 800mg then 400mg (acute). Take with food or milk. Max dose 6.5mg/kg ideal body weight.

Contraindications

Risk of retinopathy, cardiomyopathy, QTc prolongation/arrhythmias, severe hypoglycemia, bone marrow depression, and drug-induced liver injury. Can impair vision/driving.
